Here’s Why and How to Get Involved . . .

Benefits and Impact.

Besides the permanent preservation and other direct benefits for the sites themselves, World Heritage inscription will produce economic growth and jobs in Ohio in the clean, sustainable Heritage Tourism sector. Evidence from case studies around the world and right here in the Midwest point to at least a 10-fold increase in visitation directly as a result of UNESCO World Heritage inscription.

The Friends Group.

Hope Taft, former First Lady of Ohio, has worked to help establish the “Friends of Ancient Ohio Earthworks.” The Friends’ mission is to help advance the nomination process by raising both the awareness and the funds needed for the preparation and the success of the nomination.

Political Advocacy.

Advancing Ohio’s World Heritage nominations is dependent on a favorable political climate, including the support of local, state, and national leaders. Besides helping them to understand the requirements and the benefits of inscription, there is the issue of the US’s non-payment of its dues to UNESCO, which may impact votes on US sites until it is resolved.
